Denzel Washington doesn't usually do sequels, so it's natural to wonder how many 'Equalizer' movies there are. The thrilling R-rated action series offers different stories and varying levels of quality. With Denzel Washington and director Antoine Fuqua at the helm, the three movies have been solid genre offerings, though they haven't reached the same heights as other Hollywood franchises.
Still, they've consistently drawn audiences. The franchise centres on Washington's character, Robert McCall, who tries to leave his violent past behind but keeps getting pulled into dangerous situations in his quest for justice. Whether he's protecting the vulnerable or facing the consequences of his actions, McCall's journey keeps the franchise engaging.
While 'The Equalizer 3' seems to wrap things up, hints about 'The Equalizer 4' suggest McCall's story might not be finished yet.

1. 'The Equalizer' (2014)

While the 'Equalizer' series has its strengths, it never quite outshone the first film. The original movie, though not flawless, delivered the action fans craved. Released alongside 'John Wick,' it proved that action flicks could draw audiences beyond superhero blockbusters, thanks largely to a stellar lead performance.
'The Equalizer' thrives on simplicity, eschewing unnecessary complexity in favour of pitting McCall against his adversaries and letting the action unfold. Despite its flaws—being too long, cliched and repetitive—it still offers exhilarating action scenes that compensate for its drawbacks. 'The Equalizer' could have stood alone as a memorable action film, but it's Washington's portrayal of Robert McCall that leaves audiences eager for more.
2. 'The Equalizer 3' (2023)

In 'The Equalizer 3,' director Fuqua raises the stakes as McCall ventures into southern Italy to fight injustice. However, he discovers that his new allies are under mafia control, plunging him into a perilous showdown with crime bosses.
The film blends the swift action of its predecessors with heightened personal stakes, yet struggles with a shallow plot that fails to sustain its runtime. Despite its lack of innovation, fans will still appreciate McCall's righteous battles, buoyed by Washington's standout performance. While the trilogy's conclusion may not break new ground, it offers McCall a satisfying resolution.
3. 'The Equalizer 2' (2018)

While 'The Equalizer 2' isn't necessarily a terrible movie, it falls short compared to its predecessor. It lacks the gripping energy that made the first film so compelling. Director Fuqua had many avenues to explore, yet the sequel failed to capitalize on its potential.
The story follows McCall as he investigates the murder of a friend and seeks revenge. While the personal angle adds emotional depth, the slow pace hampers the film's momentum. Much of the plot consists of McCall conducting his investigation at his own pace, without the urgency needed to keep the audience engaged.
Nonetheless, there are enjoyable moments, particularly the dynamic between Washington and Pedro Pascal, foreshadowing their reunion in 'Gladiator 2.'
