‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ Review: Sequel Does Not Outdo The Original

The chill of franchise fatigue continues to creep in, leaving once-vibrant films frozen in a state of dullness. The ‘Ghostbusters’ series, now stumbling back with ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,’ seems to be suffering from this icy spell, offering little in terms of innovation or excitement. This latest addition, essentially ‘Ghostbusters 4’ (or ‘Ghostbusters 5’ if we count the 2016 reboot), fails to inject much-needed life into the franchise.

One positive change is the return to the bustling streets of New York City, the natural habitat of Ghostbusters lore, after the previous film’s lacklustre setting in small-town Oklahoma. The familiar faces of Callie, her partner Gary, and her kids Trevor and Phoebe, are now at the helm of the ghostbusting business, adding a touch of nostalgia as they drive the iconic car and set up shop in the legendary firehouse.

However, the appearances of the older generation feel lacklustre, with Bill Murray’s Dr Venkman seeming distracted rather than delightfully droll.

The plot kicks into gear when a slick character named Nadeem attempts to sell an ancient orb to Ray, setting off a chain of events involving an ice-powered ghost threatening humanity’s existence. While there are a few amusing moments scattered throughout, the overall comedic delivery falls flat.

Kumail Nanjiani shines amidst the new cast, injecting much-needed humour and subversion into the film, while others struggle to find their comedic footing.

Ultimately, it’s time for Hollywood to let go of the ‘Ghostbusters’ franchise and explore new horizons. With tired tropes and lacklustre performances, it’s clear that this once-beloved series needs a fresh start. Perhaps it’s time to bid farewell to the ‘Ghostbusters’ and make room for the next big thing in cinema.
