Since Netflix declared the revival of the studio romcom with its 'Summer of Love' in 2018, the platform has been delivering a consistent flow of formulaic, or as some reviews put it, "algorithmic," home-viewing content. This genre, once dormant, found a new streaming habitat, characterised by its watchable, glossy and disposable nature.
Having reviewed around a dozen of these films, only a handful have left a lasting impression. Notable among them are 'To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before' and 'Set It Up,' which owe much of their appeal to the charisma of their stars. A similar charm elevates 2019’s 'Someone Great,' turning an average movie into something memorable, thanks to Gina Rodriguez's breezy performance.
Gina Rodriguez, known for her role in 'Jane the Virgin,' effortlessly embodies the quintessential romantic lead: a captivating smile, expressive eyes, boundless energy, and a relatable aura of positivity. In 'Players,' a new Netflix romcom released on Valentine’s Day, Rodriguez takes the spotlight as Mack, a sports journalist in Brooklyn eager to elevate her romantic game.
Directed by Trish Sie and written by Whit Anderson, 'Players' sees Rodriguez's magnetic presence overshadowing the film's occasional absurdities. The plot follows Mack and her friends - fellow journalist Adam (Damon Wayans Jr.), the sassy Brannagan (Augustus Prew), and Brannagan’s brother Little (Joel Courtney) - as they navigate the complexities of modern dating with a sporting mindset.

The film takes a light-hearted approach to Mack's quest for love, injecting humour into the sometimes ludicrous schemes concocted by the characters. However, things take a serious turn when Mack encounters Nick Marshall (Tom Ellis), an accomplished war journalist. Suddenly, the game changes and Mack finds herself grappling with genuine feelings amid the chaos of romance.
'Players' cleverly balances its comedic elements with a sincere exploration of Mack's personal and professional aspirations. Rodriguez breathes life into the character, portraying her struggles and desires with authenticity. Wayans delivers a charming performance as Mack's potential love interest, while Ellis adds depth to his character as the object of Mack's affection.

Despite its occasional missteps, 'Players' succeeds in offering more substance than typical rom-com fare. With its relatable characters and heartfelt moments, the film transcends the confines of its genre, batting far above average in the streaming landscape.
