Will ‘Ocean’s 14’ Ever Happen?

Since the success of 2018’s ‘Ocean’s 8,’ there’s been considerable buzz about the potential return of the original crew in ‘Ocean’s 14.’ The franchise, which began with the 1960 film featuring Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack, was rebooted in 2001 by director Steven Soderbergh. The stylish remake starred George Clooney as Danny Ocean, leading a star-studded team including Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, and Elliott Gould in a high-stakes heist.

The success of ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ led to two sequels, but the franchise concluded with ‘Ocean’s Thirteen’ in 2007. Clooney had previously ruled out a return to the series, partly due to the death of Bernie Mac in 2008. However, the 2018 spinoff, ‘Ocean’s 8,’ featuring Sandra Bullock as Danny’s sister, Debbie Ocean, reignited interest in the series. The film’s success fuelled speculation about a possible return of the original cast in ‘Ocean’s 14.’

Although George Clooney revealed that a script for ‘Ocean’s 14’ was in development, recent comments from stars Matt Damon and Casey Affleck have cast doubt on the project. Affleck suggested he was unaware of any sequel plans beyond Clooney’s announcement, indicating that no one from the original cast has been approached about the project.

Despite the uncertainty, Clooney’s enthusiasm for the script offers a glimmer of hope. The film industry is notorious for churning out scripts that never make it to the big screen, and ‘Ocean’s 14’ could easily follow this trend. However, Clooney’s involvement could be a significant factor in bringing the sequel to life.

There’s speculation that ‘Ocean’s 14’ could see the return of familiar faces such as Matt Damon’s Linus Caldwell and Brad Pitt’s Rusty Ryan. Additionally, there’s a possibility that Sandra Bullock’s Debbie Ocean might join the heist, bridging the gap between the spinoff and the original trilogy.

The franchise has always followed a formula of elaborate heists, and ‘Ocean’s 14 would likely continue this tradition. Clooney has hinted that the new film might be akin to the 1979 comedy Going in Style, which features a group of elderly men attempting one final heist. Given that many of the franchise’s stars are now in middle age, ‘Ocean’s 14’ could revolve around a “retirement heist,” where the crew aims to pull off one last big job and retire from their criminal life for good.
