In the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement sparked once again following the death of Minneapolis resident George Floyd at the hand of police officers, we take a look at some of the most renowned black musicians who’ve been an influence world over.
The tragic murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers has sparked world-wide outrage with several African-American artists from the world of hip-hop and beyond calling for a change in the systemic racism displayed through police brutality.
A video of police officer Derek Chauvin allegedly suffocating 46-year-old Floyd by kneeling on his neck surfaced on the Internet on May 25. Floyd can be heard saying the words “I can’t breathe” while the officer continues planting his knee into his neck. Floyd went to Hennepin County Medical Center after falling unconscious. He died shortly after. Derek Chauvin has since been sacked and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter.
Musicians have called for justice for George Floyd and given their support to the Black Lives Matter movement as protests continue to rage across the US.
