‘I Can’t Breath’ Singer Sets Record At Oscars 2021

The 93rd Annual Academy Awards took place on Sunday, 25th April at the Union Station and we witnessed some individuals setting a few records with their big wins from the night. Read on to find out more!

Halfway To EGOT!

23-year-old American singer Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson, known professionally as H.E.R won the Oscar for ‘Best Original Song’ for ‘Fight For You’. This was a record-breaking moment for H.E.R and her co-writers of the song- D’Mile and Tiara Thomas as this was the first time in 35 years that a songwriting team has won an Oscar in the same season that they won a Grammy for Song of the Year for a different song. ( I can’t breathe)

The last time this happened was in 1986 when Lionel Richie won a Grammy with Michael Jackson for “We are the World” and then went on to win an Oscar for “Say You, Say Me”.

Looks like the young singer is well on her way to an EGOT! ( Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony)

Quite A Night At The Oscars

H.E.R’s win came as an unexpected surprise as many had bet their money on Diane Warren who now has 12 Best Song nominations without a win. Ouch! Let’s hope next year works out better for her.

Chloé Zhao became the first woman of color to win the Oscar for Best Director for Nomadland. She is also only the second woman to win an award in this category. Way to go Zhao!

Other wins from the night include- Anthony Hopkins( Best Actor), Frances McDormand( Best Actress), Daniel Kaluuya (Best Supporting Actor), Yuh-Jung Youn ( Best Supporting Actress), and Soul for best-animated feature film.
