Katy Perry Defends Controversial 'Woman’s World' Music Video as “Satirical”

Katy Perry has addressed backlash over her latest single’s music video, ‘Woman’s World’, describing it as a deliberate “satirical” portrayal. The pop star released the video on 11th July following weeks of anticipation, depicting Perry on a quest to uplift women globally.

“Sexy, confident / So intelligent / She is heaven-sent / So soft, so strong / She’s a winner, champion / Superhuman, number one / She’s a sister, she’s a mother“, she sings.

In the video, Perry and a group of women engage in traditionally masculine activities, such as construction work (with a nod to Rosie the Riveter) and driving monster trucks.

Critics argued that the video seemed to reinforce rather than challenge the male gaze. However, Perry recently shared on social media, possibly during the video’s production, clarifying that its intent was to satirize gender norms.

“You can do anything! Even satire!” she wrote on X, alongside a video clip that opens with her loudly proclaiming, “Girlboss s**t! You can do it, you go girl!”

Perry then breaks out of character and begins to explain her intentions with the track. “We’re kind of just having fun, being a bit sarcastic with it. It’s very slapstick and very on the nose.”

“And with this set, it’s like, ‘Oooh, we’re not about the male gaze but we really are about the male gaze,’ and we’re really overplaying it and on the nose because I’m about to get smashed which is like a reset for me, and a reset for my idea of feminine divine, and it’s a whole different world we go to after this.”

“We wanted to open this video making it look like a super high gloss pop star video, and that’s what it is,” she concluded.

Earlier this week, the ‘California Girls’ singer unveiled the title of her new album and its cover art on her official social media accounts. The artwork features her suspended in a pink and blue whirlwind. Titled ‘143’, the album is scheduled for release on 20th September and is now open for pre-sale/pre-order.

Discussing the album recently, Katy Perry characterized it as a universal “dance party” welcoming everyone to join in.

“It’s called 143. It’s my angel number. It’s my symbol, it’s my sign,” she explained. “A couple years ago, we were going through a little bit of a hard time medically in our family, and it was a little bit scary, and I started seeing 143 in many different ways, not just on the phone.”

In May, she initiated hints about her upcoming phase by updating her profile picture and dropping clues about “one of [her] biggest songs yet to be released” during an American Idol event.

Back in December, reports surfaced about the pop star preparing to unveil her “most personal” material in 2024. It was also noted then that plans for a global tour were in the works.
