Shawn Mendes’ Reflective New Single: ‘Wonder’
When Shawn Mendes announced his new musical era, he promised honesty and realness anew. And, the first taste of the upcoming album, a single called ‘Wonder’, has delivered truth in lyrical vulnerability like never before. Everything about this new addition to his discography is new – the writing, the arrangement and the expression.
Honesty and Reflection in ‘Wonder’
‘Wonder’ marks the first single from Shawn Mendes’ upcoming fourth studio album of the same name. The track is a neo classic pop ballad that offers a new look at the young singer and his deepest thoughts. But, also, falls within the circumference of his lesser-know (but previously hinted at) artistic persona. Interestingly, as Shawn asks himself: “I wonder if I’m being real/ Do I speak my truth or do I filter how I feel?”, he delivers his most honest songwriting, yet.
Further, ‘Wonder’ continues to detail and question some of Mendes’ innermost thoughts, accompanied by a new sound, too. The dainty, piano-led verse runs into a chorus peppered with horns, strings and a ballad-esque crescendo that is reminiscent of a moment from a Christopher Nolan movie. In fact, the sound resonates strongly with Mendes’ personal preferences – John Mayer, Taylor Swift and the like.
The Prequel to ‘Wonder’
In addition, though moving far enough away from his previous commercial hits, the Canadian star isn’t necessarily going through a transformation. But, an evolution would be an apt description.
And, in the light of his past revelations – struggles with anxiety and insecurity – ‘Wonder’ hits harder. Back in 2018, Mendes revealed that ‘In My Blood’ detailed some of his darkest moments since skyrocketing to global fame. And now, ‘Wonder’ takes off where that track stopped – picking up in full blast, wrapped in moments of reflection.
‘Wonder’, out now, is accompanied by an official music video that opens all the right doors to his new era in music. The studio album, also called ‘Wonder’, is slated for release on the 4th of December. Currently, you can also catch ‘Wonder’ playing out ON-AIR, right here on IndigoMusic.com.
