What It’s Like to Work with Tom Cruise on ‘Mission: Impossible’, According to the Cast

In addition to his iconic performances and death-defying exploits, Tom Cruise is renowned for his passion, generosity, and energy on set.  People who have worked closely with the action legend are sharing their perspectives on what it's like to be a part of his world as he prepares to release on 23rd May ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ in theatres.

 Resuming her role as CIA Director Erika Sloane, Angela Bassett thought back on a memorable everyday experience.  Tom Cruise's signature arrival style, the unmistakable sound of a helicopter, greeted her every morning on location. This detail never failed to make her grin.  It served as a special reminder of the scope and dedication of the production that Tom Cruise brings to it.

For some, such as Ving Rhames, who plays tech guru Luther Stickell in all eight movies, Tom Cruise's impact goes beyond his career.  Over the years, Rhames and Tom Cruise have developed a deep friendship that is marked by companionship and respect. Fans continue to enjoy the on-screen chemistry that has sprung from their friendship.

 Simon Pegg, a field agent named Benji Dunn who joined the series in 2006, recalled the cordial greeting he received from Rhames and Tom Cruise on his first day.  His experience on set was shaped by that first encounter, which was characterised by inclusivity and friendliness.

Tom Cruise frequently makes unexpected gestures.  Pegg recalled a time when, on his birthday, while snowboarding in the Alps, he was surprised by a specially made cake from a nearby bakery, which Tom Cruise himself had planned.  Cruise's attempt to make that occasion memorable, even from a distance, shows how considerate he is in his interactions with his co-stars.

 Returning as the mysterious thief Grace, Hayley Atwell stressed the value of having fun while filming.  She believed that keeping a sense of humour was crucial to fostering a collaborative environment and establishing trust, both of which Tom Cruise promoted.  According to Atwell, the greatest way to describe the dynamic and unpredictable nature of the job was the spontaneity on set, particularly the creative interplay between director Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise.  Their collaboration, which has been honed over several movies, has produced a quick-paced, natural working style that keeps performers interested and receptive.

According to Czerny, script revisions were common and frequently happened in the middle of scenes.  He made a lighthearted allusion to a cast joke about how soon new script pages would become outdated.  The team's desire for authenticity and quality was mirrored in this flexible, constantly changing scripting approach.

 No member of the cast fails to notice the intensity Tom Cruise brings to each scene.  Pegg explained how Cruise's excitement was evident even during difficult or dangerous actions, such as the mid-air scenes from ‘Ghost Protocol’.  His commitment, which frequently verges on fearlessness, is a major factor in the franchise's continuous success.

Bassett agreed, describing his demeanour as "pure drive and enthusiasm."  Tom Cruise constantly seeks to bring out the best in everyone around him, she said.  He continues to be the most diligent worker on the set, whether it's assisting a co-star in achieving their goals or leading by example.  It is a unique and fulfilling experience for Bassett to work with someone who is so devoted to the team and the art.

 Fans can anticipate not only thrilling stunts but also the fruits of a cast and crew led by one of the most committed actors in the business when ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ hits theatres.
