’28 Years Later’ Receives June 2025 Release Date

Danny Boyle’s eagerly anticipated film ’28 Years Later’ is set to hit cinemas next summer, with Sony Pictures marking 20th June 2025, for its release. The sequel to the acclaimed ’28 Days Later’ and ’28 Weeks Later’ will feature stellar performances from Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes.

Details of the storyline remain shrouded in secrecy for now, as Alex Garland has penned the screenplay for this new instalment. This film is poised to be the first of a trilogy, with discussions underway for Nia DaCosta to direct the second film.

Boyle and Garland are taking on producing duties alongside original producers Andrew Macdonald and Peter Rice, with Bernie Bellew also joining as a producer. Although Cillian Murphy returns as an executive producer, his on-screen involvement is yet to be confirmed.

’28 Days Later,’ which hit screens in 2002, introduced audiences to a gripping narrative following a bike courier, played by the then relatively unknown Murphy, who stumbles upon a deadly virus post-coma. Boyle directed the film, with Garland handling the writing. Its sequel, ’28 Weeks Later,’ followed in 2007.

Reflecting on his attachment to the franchise, Murphy shared with Variety in February, “I’ve always said I would love to be involved because that movie changed everything for me and I have great affection for it and for those guys Alex [Garland] and Danny [Boyle]. I never watch my own films, except for that one. It’s always on around Halloween and during the pandemic people were constantly sending me clips. And I’ve shown it to my kids. And it’s really stood up, even though it’s something like 23 years old now. So I’m really thrilled that we’ll get the band back together to make this one.”
