‘Star Wars’ Profits Revealed: How Much Has The Franchise Made?

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has released new data that shows how much money Disney made from the ‘Star Wars’ property. According to the report, sales reached an astounding $12 billion, almost tripling the $4.05 billion purchase price in 2012.

The success of the most recent ‘Star Wars’ trilogy— ‘The Force Awakens’, ‘The Last Jedi’ and ‘The Rise of Skywalker ’—as well as five Disney+ series, which include well-known shows like ‘The Mandalorian,’ ‘The Book of Boba Fett’, Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka, are credited with this increase in earnings.

Disney continues to make a lot of money from ‘Star Wars’ even in the face of criticism regarding the calibre of its most recent movies and TV series. Theme park attractions and merchandise sales both play a major role in this large revenue.

Remarkably, according to Disney’s Plan for Shareholder Value Creation as of March 2024, the ‘Avengers’, ‘Frozen’, and ‘Toy Story’ are among its most lucrative intellectual properties; ‘Star Wars’ isn’t even at the top of the list.

Reacting to the news that ‘Star Wars’ was not Disney’s highest-grossing film, fans blamed the drop in quality of the studio’s more recent releases. A few conveyed their dissatisfaction, pointing out that the franchise’s reputation was harmed and that chances were lost. There were worries expressed that the costs of marketing and production might exceed the profits.

In related news, Ewan McGregor has stated that he would be interested in returning to the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi for a second season, though Disney has not yet confirmed this.
