This article contains spoilers for episode four of 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.'
Showrunner Ira Parker is admitting he made a misstep—and longtime 'Dunk and Egg' fans were quick to notice it.
The 'Game of Thrones' prequel has earned praise for closely following George R. R. Martin's novella 'The Hedge Knight.' Martin himself has applauded the adaptation for staying true to the source material. Still, Parker made a few creative changes, and there is one missing scene he now wishes he had kept.
Missing Scene in 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms'
During a recent Reddit AMA, a fan pointed out that the show left out a meaningful exchange between Dunk, played by Peter Claffey, and the blacksmith Steely Pate, played by Youssef Kerkour. The moment would have appeared in episode four as Dunk prepares for his Trial of the Seven.

In the book, as Dunk walks toward what could be his death, members of the smallfolk pat him on the back and wish him luck. Confused, Dunk asks why they care about him. Steely Pate answers that he is a knight who remembered his vows—a line many readers consider the emotional heart of the story.
One fan argued that this exchange captures the soul and moral message of the entire novella, especially because it happens at Dunk's lowest point, before he knows whether anyone will stand beside him in battle.
Parker responded honestly, admitting the scene had originally been in the script but was later cut. He called it a mistake on his part and acknowledged it would not be his first or last on the show. While he agrees that the idea of a knight remembering his vows is central to the story, he believes that theme still shines through in Dunk's actions, even if the line itself is never spoken.

Many fans appreciated his candid answer, praising him for being open about the oversight.
Even without the scene, the message still appears elsewhere in the episode. Prince Baelor Breakspear Targaryen, played by Bertie Carvel, steps forward to fight alongside Dunk, making it clear that protecting the innocent is what defines a true knight.
Ira Parker Points to Another Error
Parker also admitted to another small error during the AMA. A fan asked why Prince Maekar and Prince Aerion were not wearing their personal coat of arms as described in the books. In the series, both princes wear standard Targaryen heraldry rather than the customised armour detailed in the novella.
Parker said that fans had now pointed out two mistakes he had not previously realised, and he agreed that adding Maekar's personal symbol would have made it much easier to identify him in the fog during battle.

Despite those slip-ups, the series continues to receive strong reviews. Martin has said he loved all six episodes of the first season, and the show currently holds high scores from both critics and audiences.
New episodes of 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' air Sunday nights on HBO and stream on HBO Max.
