A sequel to the 2024 film ‘Alien: Romulus’ is officially underway, with director Fede Álvarez confirming that production will begin later this year. Álvarez, who revived the iconic sci-fi horror franchise with Romulus, revealed during a recent appearance on the Marea Nocturna podcast that pre-production for the next instalment is already in motion. He stated that the team is preparing to start filming in October, suggesting that development on the follow-up has progressed swiftly. His comments were later cited by Fangoria.
Alien: Romulus was released in August 2024 and positioned itself narratively between the events of Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979) and James Cameron’s Aliens (1986). The story focused on a group of young space colonists scavenging an abandoned space station, only to come face-to-face with a terrifying alien presence. The film starred Cailee Spaeny—best known for her portrayal of Priscilla Presley in Priscilla—alongside David Jonsson, recognised for his roles in Industry and Rye Lane.
Though 20th Century Studios has not officially confirmed a release window for the sequel, Álvarez’s production timeline points to a possible summer 2026 premiere. If achieved, this would mark one of the quicker turnarounds in the modern Alien franchise.

In parallel with the cinematic sequel, the Alien universe is also expanding onto television. FX is set to premiere Alien: Earth on 12 August 2025. Created by Noah Hawley, the series is set two years prior to the events of the 1979 film and promises to explore the Xenomorph threat in new ways. The show stars Sydney Chandler, Timothy Olyphant, and Alex Lawther.
While plot details remain under wraps for the Romulus sequel, fans of the franchise can expect the same blend of claustrophobic terror and character-driven suspense that made the original films so enduring. Álvarez’s approach in Romulus—which balanced homage to the originals with fresh storytelling—was generally well received by both longtime fans and newcomers.
Franchise Expands with ‘Romulus’ Sequel and FX’s ‘Alien: Earth’ Series
Between the upcoming sequel and the FX series, the Alien franchise appears to be entering a new era of creative expansion, blending nostalgia with contemporary horror. Whether these projects will pave the way for even more entries in the iconic sci-fi saga remains to be seen, but for now, anticipation is steadily building.
