The creators of the Apple TV+ comedy series ‘The Studio’ shared that Martin Scorsese gave feedback on a scene he featured in, but intentionally refrained from intervening during the shoot.
Scorsese, who makes a cameo as himself in the show’s debut episode, plays a version of the famed director pitching a dark historical drama about the Jonestown massacre to studio head Matt Remick, portrayed by Seth Rogen. Under pressure to develop a franchise film involving the Kool-Aid Man, Remick agrees to acquire the screenplay. He later tells the studio CEO that he bought the script solely to discreetly shelve it, and eventually breaks the news to Scorsese that the film won’t be produced—or shopped to any other studio. The episode ends with a heartbroken Scorsese breaking down at a party hosted by Charlize Theron.

Speaking to People, co-creator Alex Gregory said that Scorsese had shared “one note” after the fact, holding off during filming to avoid stepping on anyone’s toes. Fellow creator Evan Goldberg added that during a scene between Scorsese and Theron, it took about ten takes to capture the right moment. When Goldberg later asked what they had been whispering about, Scorsese admitted he had sensed something was off but chose not to intervene.
Goldberg recalled that Scorsese admitted he had realised something was being done incorrectly during filming, but chose not to speak up because he didn’t want to act like a backseat director. In response, Goldberg noted that while they could have saved time, he appreciated Scorsese’s restraint.
Jonah Hill’s Influence and Season 2 Cameo Wishlist
Goldberg also credited Jonah Hill—who worked with Scorsese on ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’—as a likely influence in securing the filmmaker’s appearance in the show, suggesting Hill may have put in a good word.
Looking ahead to season two, the creators shared that they’re hoping to bring in big names like Zendaya, James Cameron, and Leonardo DiCaprio for future cameo appearances.
