Actor and singer Anthony Ramos has spoken out about Madonna’s alleged conduct during a 2015 performance of the Broadway hit ‘Hamilton: An American Musical’, claiming the pop icon spent the show staring at her iPad.

In a recent episode of ‘Watch What Happens Live! with Andy Cohen’, Ramos, who played the roles of John Laurens and Philip Hamilton in the original Broadway run, was asked about the most intimidating celebrity he had encountered during his time in the production. He named Madonna, describing her as “terrifying” due to what he said was her constant attention to her device throughout the performance. Imitating her posture, Ramos remarked that she had the iPad in front of her face the entire time. He went on to say he felt as though she wasn’t enjoying the show and joked that “the door’s right there” if she wasn’t interested.

Ramos remained part of the production until November 2016.

His comments added to long-standing rumours about Madonna’s behaviour during her 2015 visit to ‘Hamilton’. Around the same time, Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator and original star of the show, posted a cryptic message on X (formerly Twitter), saying it was the first time he had asked stage management to bar a celebrity from coming backstage due to them texting throughout Act Two. Although he didn’t mention anyone by name, widespread speculation suggested he was referring to Madonna, who was known to have attended the performance around that time.

Miranda never confirmed the identity of the person in question, and Madonna’s representatives issued a denial. In a statement to Us Weekly, her publicist said the rumours were false, claiming that Madonna had been invited backstage on four separate occasions and had only sent messages during the show’s post-performance fundraising segment. The representative also pointed out that Madonna had already made a generous donation.

‘Hamilton’ opened on Broadway in August 2015 and quickly became a cultural landmark, blending hip-hop, R&B, and traditional musical theatre to retell the life of U.S. Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. The production, created by Lin-Manuel Miranda, went on to earn 11 Tony Awards, a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and produce a cast album that broke records. A filmed version of the show premiered on Disney+ in 2020 to critical acclaim.

Earlier this month, the original cast reunited for a special performance at the 2025 Tony Awards to mark ten years since ‘Hamilton’ first debuted. The medley featured Miranda alongside Leslie Odom Jr., Phillipa Soo, Daveed Diggs, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Christopher Jackson, Jonathan Groff, Ariana DeBose, and others.

Madonna Teases New Music, Netflix Series in the Works

Meanwhile, Madonna has been teasing several new projects. She recently announced the long-rumoured ‘Veronica Electronica’ album, originally conceived as a companion to her 1998 release ‘Ray of Light’. She has also teased a possible reunion with producer Stuart Price, which could lead to a follow-up to her 2005 album ‘Confessions on a Dance Floor’. Reports also suggest she is working on a Netflix series based on her life, with rumours of collaboration with ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ director Shawn Levy.
