Anya Taylor-Joy Reveals Which Role Caused Her 'First Heartbreak'

Anya Taylor-Joy’s debut film, ‘The Witch,' marked her Hollywood breakthrough and established her as one of the most in-demand actors of her generation. While debut films often bring many firsts for actors, such as their first kiss on screen, Taylor-Joy experienced her “first heartbreak” with this role. ‘The Witch’ paved the way for a series of iconic roles, including her performances in ‘The Queen’s Gambit’, ‘Emma’, ‘BBC’s Peaky Blinders’, and the upcoming ‘Furiosa.'

Reflecting on her journey, Taylor-Joy recalled how finishing the horror film 'The Witch' left her feeling heartbroken. In an episode ‘Actors on Actors’ series, revealed that she often cries “hysterically” on aeroplanes after wrapping up projects. However, she described it as “good crying,” signifying the emotional investment she puts into her roles.

Taylor-Joy’s portrayal of the chess prodigy in ‘The Queen’s Gambit' catapulted her to global fame, earning her a Golden Globe and a Primetime Emmy Award nomination. Speaking about her character in the coming-of-age period drama miniseries, she mentioned, “I think spending seven episodes with Beth was good. Nonetheless, I would’ve felt cheated or like I didn’t spend enough time with her to ensure she was okay. It sounds mental, but I know you understand what I mean.”

Her latest project, ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’, is anticipated to be the biggest of her career so far. Taylor-Joy expressed her excitement, particularly highlighting the involvement of director George Miller. “The thing that makes me most excited about Furiosa is No. 1, George Miller,” she said, underscoring her admiration for the acclaimed filmmaker.
