Billie Eilish and Dua Lipa Say They Hate Karaoke

In a chat on ‘Off Script’ with The Hollywood Reporter, stars like Olivia Rodrigo, Cynthia Erivo, Julia Michaels, and Jon Batiste were asked about their go-to karaoke songs.

Michaels wasted no time revealing her pick: “‘Wanna Be,’ Spice Girls,” she declared. Erivo opted for Tina Turner’s “We Don’t Need Another Hero.”

Rodrigo chimed in with, “Mine is ‘Dancing Queen,’ Abba,” earning unanimous approval. However, Lipa admitted, “I hate singing at karaoke… my friends hate it. So it’s all a bit weird. But I do ‘Changes’ by Tupac.” Batiste’s choice? ‘Lose Yourself’ by Eminem. Eilish confessed she’s “never done karaoke” and doesn’t fancy singing outside her “karaoke box” from her upbringing.

Switching gears, Lipa shared insights into crafting ‘Dance the Night,’ her Grammy-nominated hit from the Barbie soundtrack. Despite being on tour, she seized the opportunity to collaborate with producer Mark Ronson and discuss the vision with director Greta Gerwig.

“Greta was saying how inspired by disco she was,” Lipa explained. “I just thought about disco and the community it brings, and the way it brings people together. It was always a genre of music that was such a release when things weren’t going well in the world.”

‘Dance the Night’ was tailor-made for Barbie’s best day ever, juxtaposing the joy with thoughts about mortality. Meanwhile, Eilish shared her creative struggles before penning ‘What Was I Made For?’ with her brother Finneas for ‘Barbie.’

“I honestly was concerned that it was over for me,” she admitted. A call from Gerwig in January changed the game. “Greta saved me, really, honestly,” Eilish revealed. “It brought us out of it, and immediately we were inspired and wrote so much more after that.”
