Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo Are Among The Artists Shortlisted For Best Original Song

The 2024 Academy Awards shortlist is out, and it’s a star-studded affair with the likes of Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, and Olivia Rodrigo making the cut. The Academy unveiled the shortlists in 10 categories, including the coveted ‘Best Original Song’ and ‘Best Original Score.’

In the running for ‘Best Original Song’ are 15 noteworthy tunes, including Dua Lipa’s ‘Dance The Night,’ Billie Eilish’s ‘What Was I Made For?,’ and the quirky ‘I’m Just Ken’ by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, belted out by none other than Ryan Gosling.

Olivia Rodrigo also earned a nod for her contribution to ‘The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes’ soundtrack with ‘Can’t Catch Me Now.’ Other notable mentions include A$AP Rocky and Roisee’s ‘Am I Dreaming?’ from ‘Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse’ and Wes Anderson, co-writing Jarvis Cocker’s banjo-led Asteroid City ditty, ‘Dear Alien (Who Art In Heaven).’

The ‘Best Original Score’ shortlist is equally diverse, spanning Ludwig Göransson’s and John Williams’ grand scores for ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,’ respectively, to the electronic soundscapes of Daniel Pemberton’s ‘Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse’ and the pop-infused work of Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt on ‘Barbie.’

Reacting to the ‘Barbie’ nods, Dua Lipa couldn’t contain her excitement and took to X to express her joy, sharing a snippet of her breakdown of ‘Dance The Night’ with Mark Ronson, exclaiming, “Thank you to [The Academy]!!!! What a dreaaaam!!!!”

The Academy’s voting period for entries in the shortlists is set from the 11th to the 16th of January, with the final nominations slated for announcement on the 23rd of January. The 96th Academy Award ceremony is scheduled for the 10th of March, 2024, at The Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood, with Jimmy Kimmel making a return as the host for the second consecutive year.

Reflecting on the 95th Academy Awards held earlier this year, the sci-fi action epic ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once,’ fronted by Michelle Yeoh, dominated the scene, bagging seven awards, including ‘Best Director,’ ‘Best Actress,’ ‘Best Supporting Actor,’ ‘Best Supporting Actress,’ and the coveted ‘Best Picture.’

The 96th Academy Awards are certainly gearing up to be a spectacle worth waiting for.
