Billie Lourd is embracing her darker side in 'Adulthood,' the new dark comedy directed by Alex Winter. The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and arrives in theatres on 19th September, stars Josh Gad and Kaya Scodelario as siblings Noah and Megan, whose lives spiral out of control after discovering a dead body in the basement of their childhood home.
Lourd, 33, takes on the role of Grace, a caretaker to the siblings' mother who has little affection for the family. Anthony Carrigan also joins the cast as Bodie, a mysterious figure who is pulled into the chaos as the story unravels.
Billie Lourd on Her Role
For Billie Lourd, the appeal of Grace came from the mix of comedy and horror within the role. She saw the character as both unhinged and funny, a balance that allowed her to fully commit to the performance while finding humour in the character's destructive tendencies. Playing a villain allowed her to explore a darker side on screen that she hadn't previously tackled in such depth.
Carrigan, 42, shared his excitement about reuniting with director Alex Winter after working together on 'Bill & Ted Face the Music.' He described the screenplay by Michael M.B. Galvin as unusual, hilarious, and offbeat, making it impossible for him to turn down the project. For Carrigan, Bodie is a unique yet familiar character, the kind of person everyone recognises from their own life.

Working with Winter was a highlight for both Billie Lourd and Carrigan. Lourd has long admired Winter, calling him one of the most versatile and inspiring creatives she has met, while Carrigan praised his sharp intellect and collaborative nature, noting that Winter makes everyone on set feel included and valued.
What Billie Lourd Feels For 'Adulthood'
The story of 'Adulthood' is unapologetically dark, with no traditional happy ending—something Billie Lourd found refreshing and true to life. For her, the chance to embody the villain of the piece was a thrilling change of pace, allowing her to push her range as an actress in a project that blurs the lines between comedy and chaos.
'Adulthood' hits theatres nationwide on 19th September, 2025.
