‘F1: The Movie’ made its world premiere in Times Square on Monday night, unveiling the adrenaline-fuelled racing drama led by Brad Pitt and Damson Idris. Directed by Joseph Kosinski — best known for ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ — the film centres on Sonny Hayes, a retired Formula 1 driver played by Pitt, who returns to the track to mentor a rising talent, portrayed by Idris.
Both actors performed much of their own driving to bring authenticity to the project. Pitt shared that his first experience behind the wheel left him amazed by the speed and control of the F1 cars, especially their ability to hold tight corners and brake swiftly. He described a blend of adrenaline and calm that takes over while driving, calling the feeling “lovely” and almost meditative.
Idris recalled that his initial reaction when stepping into the car was simply to survive. He described the experience as exhilarating and said that working alongside Pitt made it all the more memorable. The actor noted that they underwent four months of intensive training, not only to drive but to maintain composure and deliver lines convincingly on camera.

He confidently told reporters that the film would stand out as the most realistic racing movie ever made, crediting the production’s commitment to accuracy and immersion. Idris expressed pride in the final result and enthusiasm for seeing major cinema experiences make a comeback.
Director Joseph Kosinski revealed that getting the lead actors into the driver’s seat required extensive talks with insurance companies. However, both Brad Pitt and Damson Idris demonstrated impressive driving abilities and were personally approved by seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who also served as a producer on the film.
Real F1 Access Powers High-Speed Authenticity in ‘F1: The Movie’
Kosinski added that filming portions of the movie at real Formula 1 events was made possible thanks to the access and support granted by Formula 1 itself, something he was deeply grateful for.
‘F1: The Movie’ races into cinemas on 27th June.
