Brandy Honours Whitney Houston’s Legacy in ‘Descendants’ Cinderella Role

Brandy fondly recalls her experience alongside Whitney Houston, reflecting on her enduring role as Cinderella in Disney’s upcoming film, ‘Descendants: The Rise of Red’. In an exclusive interview, Brandy shares her thoughts on revisiting the iconic character two decades after her groundbreaking portrayal in ‘Rodgers & Hammerstein’s’ 1997 TV movie.

“It’s such an honour and blessing to inspire people and encourage young girls to dream big,” Brandy remarks, acknowledging the significance of her role as the first Black Cinderella.

“I didn’t realise the impact it would have initially,” she continues, “but looking back now, it’s truly remarkable. To have the opportunity to portray her again is a source of continued inspiration.”

Reprising her role alongside Paolo Montalban as King Charming, Brandy also reflects on the profound influence of her onscreen godmother, music icon Whitney Houston. “She’s forever a part of my life,” Brandy shares, recalling Houston’s advice to always remain true to herself and inspire others—a legacy she strives to uphold.

Brandy extends Houston’s wisdom to her young co-stars, including Malia Baker, who plays her onscreen daughter, ensuring they too embrace authenticity and inspiration. Reflecting on her enduring friendship with Houston and their time filming the 1997 TV movie, Brandy cherishes the memories of their real-life Cinderella moments. 

“We shared beautiful, humorous moments that will stay with me forever,” Brandy reminisces, expressing gratitude to Houston for the profound impact she had on her life and career.
