Carla Gugino has spoken out about her early worries about her part in ‘Gerald's Game,’ acknowledging that she thought it might be the last one in her career. The actress talked about working with director Mike Flanagan on the 2017 film adaptation of Stephen King's book in a recent interview with Buzzfeed, underlining the difficulties in adapting such a complicated tale for the big screen.

Gugino clarified, "Stephen King's book was always considered unadaptable." Furthermore, the role had previously been assigned to another actor. Thus, the time between our initial conversation to the beginning of ‘Gerald's Game’ filming was only two weeks."

Gugino understood the danger that came with playing a woman stranded in a terrifying circumstance. "We're going to do something really special here, or this is the end of my career," she said. Here, there's no room for compromise. I'm very appreciative that the former occurred."

Gugino plays one half of a couple trying to save their marriage with a trip modelled after the BDSM in the movie. But when her husband passes away unexpectedly, leaving her handcuffed to the bed, things take a terrible turn.

Gugino wasn't really into horror, but he was drawn to Flanagan's idea for the project. She recollected their early conversations, complimenting his sharp insight and comprehension of the narrative. She was inspired to join the project and help realize his vision as a result.

Renowned for his work on ‘Doctor Sleep,’ ‘Gerald's Game,’ and ‘The Haunting of Hill House,’ Flanagan forged a solid rapport with Gugino characterized by mutual respect and ease of cooperation.

Thinking back on their working relationship, Gugino said she admired Flanagan's collaborative style and mild perfectionism. She emphasized their ongoing cooperation, citing recent work on ‘The Fall of the House of Usher,’ which served as the pinnacle of their fruitful Netflix partnership.
