Three-time Academy Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis, who is known for his immensely engrossing performances, makes a return to the public eye with ‘Anemone,’ his first motion picture since retiring in 2017. The actor, who last appeared on screen in 'Phantom Thread,' is back for a role that represents a major turning point in his life: Anemone, which is co-written and directed by his son Ronan Day-Lewis. The 67-year-old actor, who has short gray hair and a horseshoe mustache, is seen in the recently published first-look photo for the movie. The picture increases excitement for Day-Lewis's comeback to the film industry by providing a sneak peek at the physical makeover for which he is famous.

Oscar-winning actor reunites with the camera in deeply personal drama directed by his son

The plot of ‘Anemone’ is supposedly about two separated brothers, Owen (played by Sean Bean) and Anthony (played by Day-Lewis), who reunite in a secluded Northern England woodland. Safia Oakley-Green, Samuel Bottomley, and Samantha Morton also feature in the movie. Notably, this is Ronan Day-Lewis's first time directing a full film. Together with his father, he has crafted a subdued, character-driven drama that is based on emotional and familial conflict. Both Day-Lewises co-wrote the movie, indicating a particularly cooperative behind-the-scenes creative process.

First-look photo revealed; film to premiere at New York Film Festival in fall 2025

The movie will have its international premiere at the 2025 New York Film Festival, where it will be shown from 26th September to 13th October in the Spotlight section. After the festival run, ‘Anemone’ will debut in select US cinemas on 3rd October, with a broader distribution scheduled for 10th October. The majority of the movie was filmed in and around Manchester towards the end of 2024. Traffic wardens issued tickets to vintage vehicles utilized on set during production, which brought some attention to the logistics of filming. The project proceeded without significant delays in spite of these small setbacks.

Overall, Daniel Day-Lewis’s return in ‘Anemone’ is being closely watched by the film industry and audiences alike, given his reputation for selective, intense performances and long gaps between roles. However, Anemone is being marketed as a private, intimate endeavour created with family rather than as a conventional comeback. With its festival debut approaching and strong names attached on and off screen, ‘Anemone’ stands as one of the more anticipated drama releases of the upcoming awards season.
