A Script That Lost Its Spark
On the podcast 'The Church of Tarantino,' Quentin Tarantino disclosed that he abandoned 'The Movie Critic,' which was originally intended to be an eight-part television series before being developed into a screenplay. Despite his enjoyment of writing it, he came to the realization that the project lacked pre-production creativity and felt too much like 'Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.' He added that there were no crossover characters—Cliff Booth was not in that script—and that it was only a spiritual sibling set in the same made-up Hollywood world around 1977.

Passing the Torch to Fincher
Tarantino chose to take a backseat and pursue a new artistic path rather than overseeing the project personally. The Adventures of Cliff Booth, a follow-up to Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, has been approved by Netflix. Production is already under way, with Brad Pitt reprising his role as the legendary Booth, and directed by David Fincher from Tarantino's screenplay.

Recently, Brad Pitt was spotted filming in Los Angeles while wearing his full Cliff Booth outfit, complete with blond wig and mustache. Scott Caan, Elizabeth Debicki, Carla Gugino, Timothy Olyphant, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and others are part of the ensemble cast. It is anticipated that filming will wrap up by mid-January 2026, having started in late July 2025.
With The Movie Critic shelved and Cliff Booth repurposed, Tarantino is letting talented collaborators take the helm while remaining creatively involved as writer and producer. This move gives him room to craft something fresh for what he still envisions as his final directorial effort.
