Emma Corrin’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Villain Was Inspired by Willy Wonka And ‘Inglourious Basterds’

Emma Corrin drew from a mix of iconic film characters to develop their role as the mysterious villain in the upcoming movie ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’. In a recent interview at the film’s world premiere, Corrin revealed that their portrayal was influenced by two distinct yet memorable characters.

“I drew inspiration from Christoph Waltz in ‘Inglourious Basterds,’ which was Ryan’s reference when we started,” Corrin explained. Waltz’s portrayal of a cunning Nazi officer, which earned him an Academy Award, served as a touchstone for crafting their villainous role.

Corrin also looked to Gene Wilder’s Willy Wonka for additional inspiration, describing the character as embodying “a sort of nonchalant, detached power.” This non-traditional source of inspiration adds a unique layer to Corrin’s portrayal, blending the enigmatic charm of Wonka with the menace of Waltz’s character. As the film approaches its release, details about Corrin’s character remain largely under wraps.

The villain, credited as Cassandra Nova, is described on Marvel’s official website as an evil twin of the X-Men’s Professor X, a character previously portrayed by Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy. This connection hints at a complex and formidable antagonist poised to make a significant impact within the ‘Marvel Cinematic Universe’.

Corrin, known for their acclaimed work on ‘The Crown’, also shared insights into the physical demands of the role. The extensive use of prosthetics and makeup posed some challenges, as Corrin noted, “It was basically just a lot of time in hair and makeup. I had a bald cap and long prosthetic fingers, which meant that I couldn’t do anything during the day. Great for my screen time. Not so great for going to the bathroom alone. I always had someone with me. It was very humbling.”

The film, directed by Shawn Levy, also features Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds alongside Corrin. The plot involves Deadpool teaming up with an alternate-timeline Wolverine to save his universe. The ensemble cast further includes Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Matthew Macfadyen, and Karan Soni, ensuring a dynamic and star-studded addition to the Marvel franchise.
