From ‘Barbie’ to The Big Stage: Ryan Gosling’s Epic Oscars Performance

Veteran dancer Anthony Kanec Carr wasn’t new to the Oscars stage, but Ryan Gosling’s ‘I’m Just Ken’ performance blew everything else out of the water. Carr, who’s also choreographing the upcoming Broadway revival of The Wiz, was part of the record-breaking 60+ dancer ensemble. He described the experience to People magazine as pure euphoria.

“It felt like the Super Bowl,” Carr said, emphasising the magnitude considering his prior experience performing at the actual Super Bowl during Katy Perry’s Halftime Show in 2015.  He fondly remembers the energy as “Ken-ergy.”

While playfully acknowledging his role as possibly the “shortest Ken doll in history,” Carr detailed the whirlwind experience.  He was not only impressed by Gosling’s musical talent but also described it as the most fun he’s ever had performing. “It was just magical,” he concluded.

He highlighted Gosling’s leadership role, praising his versatility. “He was very hands-on with the choreographer, constantly adding ideas and keeping the performance dynamic,” Carr explained.  Despite his active involvement from the very beginning, Gosling remained remarkably humble.

“He wasn’t just Ryan Gosling the celebrity,” Carr said. “He was a performer right there with us. Like Michael Jackson and his dancers – just cool.” Carr found it particularly inspiring to see a leading actor like Gosling be so involved in every aspect of the performance. “You don’t always see that level of dedication,” he noted.  “Directing, choreographing, performing – he’s incredibly talented. That’s what made it even more special.”

Carr concluded by expressing his gratitude for the opportunity.  “He’s a true performing legend,” Carr said of Gosling. “I’m so grateful to have worked alongside him and be a part of something truly special.”
