A brand-new stage musical inspired by 'Practical Magic' is officially happening, and it's ready to sprinkle some magic on the theatre world with a fresh, music-filled spin on the fan-favourite story.

The project was announced on 9th February. The musical reimagines the world of 'Practical Magic,' inspired by Alice Hoffman's bestselling novel and the popular 1998 Warner Bros. film starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. The show will come to life with brand-new music created by Grammy-winning artists Norah Jones and Gregg Wattenberg, adding a fresh and magical sound to the production.

'Practical Magic' Musical Crew

The book for the musical is being co-written by Hoffman and Peter Duchan, with Tony Award nominee Maria Friedman set to direct. Development is being led by producers Stephanie and Nicole Kramer, along with Brian and Dayna Lee, in partnership with Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures.

Hoffman has shared her enthusiasm for the adaptation, noting that the story's themes of love, sisterhood, and belonging are a natural fit for the stage. She has long felt that music is central to the heart of 'Practical Magic,' even while writing the novel, and sees the musical as a way for audiences to finally hear the story as she always imagined it.

What is 'Practical Magic' About?

Set in a small town in Massachusetts, 'Practical Magic' follows sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, who are raised by their eccentric aunts after losing their parents. Branded as outsiders due to a long-whispered family curse, the sisters grow up trying to escape their past. As adults, love, loss, and hidden truths draw them back together and force them to confront their family legacy and their true sense of home.

The novel was first published in 1995 and became a New York Times bestseller before its successful film adaptation in 1998. Hoffman later expanded the Owens family universe with three more novels: 'The Rules of Magic,' 'Magic Lessons,' and 'The Book of Magic.'

Interest in the franchise remains strong. A sequel to the original 'Practical Magic' film is currently scheduled to arrive in theatres on 11th September 2026.

Duchan brings significant musical theatre experience to the project. His past work includes the award-winning musical 'Dogfight,' as well as 'The Illusionist,' 'Stu for Silverton,' and others. He has also worked as a creative consultant on Broadway shows such as 'Waitress' and 'Lempicka.'

Jones and Wattenberg add major musical star power. Jones launched her career with her 2002 debut album 'Come Away With Me,' which swept the 2003 Grammy Awards. Since then, she has won 10 Grammys, sold more than 52 million albums worldwide, and released the Grammy-winning 2024 album 'Visions.'

Wattenberg is known for writing and producing hit songs such as Train's 'Hey, Soul Sister,' Five for Fighting's '100 Years,' and Daughtry's 'It's Not Over.' He has held executive roles in the music industry and is currently Co-CEO of the New York–based creative studio Artist House.

With a celebrated story, an experienced creative team, and a high-profile musical score, the 'Practical Magic' stage musical aims to bring a familiar world to life in an entirely new way.
