Here’s Why The Original ‘Mean Girls’ Cast Weren’t in The Musical

The ‘Mean Girls’ musical nearly brought back its original fab four, according to Tina Fey in a recent chat with The New York Times. The talks involved Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert playing cameo roles in the latest film.

Reflecting on the missed opportunity, Fey remarked, “We’ll never know. They’re busy people, so it didn’t come together, but we tried, and we all love each other.” Fey, who penned the original script and played math teacher Ms. Norbury, revisited her role in the new film while also handling the screenplay.

Expressing her motivation for revisiting the 2004 hit, Fey shared, “I have other things that I’d like to do. But I have so much gratitude that this movie seemed to stick with people. When I look at it, I am reminded of how hard I worked on it in the first place. I feel like the bricks and mortar of it were the absolute best possible job I was capable of at the time. It’s not perfect, but it holds water.”

As for the prospect of a sequel featuring the original cast as adults, Fey admitted she hasn’t given it much thought. “To me, part of why the stakes are so high in the story is because everyone’s so young and feelings are huge, love is huge and friendship is huge in a way [that it isn’t with] middle-aged moms. I love writing about middle-aged people, but I don’t know,” she mused.

Rachel McAdams, who portrayed Regina George in the original, expressed interest in the new adaptation, but challenges arose in making it work. Speaking to Variety in December, McAdams revealed, “Tina [Fey] and I sort of dabbled with a few ideas, but it was tough to make it all work in the end.” She also addressed her absence from the ‘Mean Girls’-inspired Walmart commercial in November, citing a lack of enthusiasm for commercials and not being aware of everyone’s participation.

Despite the missed commercial, McAdams expressed ongoing love for the ‘Mean Girls’ crew, stating, “I would, of course, always love to be part of a Mean Girls reunion and hang with my Plastics. But yeah, I found that out later.”

Lindsay Lohan, who attended the New York City premiere, fielded questions about being a “cool mom” after welcoming her son Luai over the summer, responding with a laugh and saying, “I hope so.”
