Hollywood And The Music Industry Reach Tentative AI Protection Agreement With Record Labels

A groundbreaking development has unfolded in the realms of Hollywood and the music industry as industry professionals, including actors and musicians, have come together to broker a preliminary agreement with leading record labels like Warner Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment. This momentous accord signals a significant stride toward safeguarding workers' rights and creative integrity within the entertainment sphere.

The tentative deal, slated to span from 2021 to 2026, encompasses crucial provisions aimed at fortifying minimum salaries and establishing safeguards against the encroachment of artificial intelligence (AI) in creative processes. Spearheaded by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), representing a substantial contingent of approximately 160,000 actors and media experts, the agreement garnered unanimous approval from the union's executive committee, as officially announced on the union's website.

The spectre of AI loomed prominently throughout the negotiation process, with paramount concerns revolving around its potential impact on artistic authenticity and originality. Deliberations last year between SAG-AFTRA and major studios delved deeply into this pressing issue, culminating in a historic contract in November following an extensive and challenging months-long strike.

Of particular focus in these discussions was the music industry's battle against AI-generated songs, which allow internet users to mimic artists' voices with remarkable accuracy, often without their explicit consent. Under the terms of the tentative agreement with record labels, obtaining explicit consent and ensuring fair compensation are mandatory prerequisites for the release of any song featuring a digital replication of an artist's voice.

Notably, the agreement delineates that terms such as artist, singer, and "royalty artist" exclusively pertain to human performers, reaffirming the irreplaceable value of genuine human expression in music creation.

Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA's National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator, underscored the pivotal significance of the agreement, emphasising the paramount importance of upholding authentic human expression and experience in the realm of music. "This agreement guarantees the protection of our members. While technology can undoubtedly enhance the creative process, the core essence of music must always remain grounded in authentic human expression and experience," Crabtree-Ireland affirmed.

Additional noteworthy aspects of the accord include enhancements in health and retirement benefits, alongside an increased share of streaming revenue allocated to acknowledge workers' contributions, marking a comprehensive and holistic approach to advancing workers' welfare within the entertainment industry.
