Hugh Jackman Reprised Wolverine Role for ‘Deadpool 3’ Without Informing His Agent

Hugh Jackman surprised everyone, including his agent, by committing to reprise his role as Wolverine in the upcoming ‘Deadpool 3.’ The actor, who had retired from the character following 2017’s ‘Logan,’ made this decision spontaneously, revealing his plans during a Fandango interview with co-star Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy.

Jackman described the moment of realization as a sudden and intense desire to collaborate with Reynolds again. “I was just driving, and out of nowhere, I had this gut feeling that I wanted to do this film with Ryan,” Jackman said. “For ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ to come back together. I genuinely thought I was done with Wolverine, but ever since I saw ‘Deadpool 1,’ I felt these two characters needed to share the screen.”

Without consulting his agent or anyone else, Jackman immediately called Reynolds to pitch the idea. “As soon as I arrived, I rang Ryan and said, ‘Let’s do it.’ I hadn’t informed my agent yet, so I had to call and say, ‘By the way, I’ve just committed to a movie,’” Jackman recounted.

Initially, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige advised against Jackman’s return as Wolverine, reminding him of the perfect closure his character received in ‘Logan.’ “I said, ‘Let me give you a piece of advice, Hugh. Don’t come back,’” Feige told Empire. “You had the greatest ending in history with ‘Logan.’ That’s not something we should undo.”

What changed Feige’s mind was the concept of exploring different timelines in the Marvel Universe, allowing Jackman to play a version of Wolverine that wouldn’t interfere with the original character’s arc. Jackman appreciated this approach, stating, “It’s all because of this device they have in the Marvel world of moving around timelines. Now we can go back because, you know, it’s science. So, I don’t have to screw with the ‘Logan’ timeline, which was important to me and probably to the fans too.”

Jackman has promised that ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ will reveal new facets of Wolverine’s character, offering audiences fresh insights into the iconic mutant. ‘Deadpool 3,’ featuring the dynamic duo of Deadpool and Wolverine, is set to hit theatres on 26th July 2024.
