Hugh Jackman Shares The Toughest Challenge of Training for Wolverine in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

Hugh Jackman is opening up about the most difficult aspect of getting back into superhero shape for his role in the upcoming ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ movie, where he stars alongside Ryan Reynolds.

The actor, known for his iconic portrayal of Wolverine, is reprising the character for the first time since 2017’s ‘Logan.’ In a recent chat with his co-star Ryan Reynolds, Jackman discussed the rigorous physical preparation required to transform into the mutant hero once again.

Ryan Reynolds, who plays Deadpool, commended Jackman for his relentless dedication to physical training. “Just the sheer relentlessness that you dedicated yourself towards stunts, choreography,” Reynolds said in an interview with People. He highlighted Jackman’s invaluable background in song and dance, noting how it enhanced his performance in action scenes. “You hit your marks in those fight scenes with speed and confidence, the likes of which I have never seen. I don’t care if you were 25, 35, 45, or 55. It was lightning,” Reynolds added, praising Jackman’s impressive stunt work.

Jackman expressed appreciation for the kind words and credited much of his physical prowess to working with stunt coordinator Brian Smrz. He revealed that Smrz suggested incorporating dance training to prepare for the action sequences, which proved to be highly effective. “When I came back to it, it was really fun and I was thrilled,” Jackman, 55, recalled. “My body was a little sore at the beginning, but I was thrilled that my body was still responding. And I realized how good it is for your brain.”

Despite his enthusiasm, Jackman admitted that bulking up presented significant challenges. “The hardest bit … the food,” he confessed. “I have to eat a lot. For me, for my body type, I’m naturally skinny. To get the size on, that’s the hardest bit. That’s the bit that does my head in.”

Reynolds related to Jackman’s struggle, noting the difficulty of consuming five to six meals a day. “Yeah, the five, six meals a day, which sounds great to some people. I’m sure they’re like, ‘Well, that sounds great.’ But it’s not like the type of food that you would really necessarily enjoy,” Reynolds added.

Earlier this month, Jackman revealed to Fandango that his decision to join the third “Deadpool” movie was so spontaneous that he forgot to inform his agent first. “Sometimes in life things come really clearly to you, and when that happens I’ve learned you just jump, you go for it,” he explained.

As fans eagerly await the release of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ Jackman’s commitment to returning as Wolverine is evident through his intense training regimen and the challenges he has embraced. His dedication to the role, despite the physical demands and dietary challenges, underscores his passion for bringing Wolverine back to life.
