Ice Spice Reveals Matty Healy Apologised Multiple Times For Racially Insensitive Podcast

Ice Spice has shared her perspective on Matty Healy. Over a year after The 1975 frontman, 35, appeared on a podcast and laughed at racially insensitive jokes about the Grammy nominee, Ice Spice confirmed in a new Rolling Stone cover story interview that Healy has since “apologized multiple times.” I was actually really late to that,” said Ice, whose real name is Isis Gaston, regarding Healy’s February 2023 appearance on The Adam Friedland Show podcast. “I didn’t know about it until like a month later.”

“He apologized multiple times, but I didn’t realize how big of a deal it was to other people,” the 24-year-old added. “I feel like people just wanted something to be mad about, I guess. I wasn’t angry or sad or anything. I was just kind of confused. I never really cared about that.”

Ice Spice also mentioned in the Rolling Stone September 2024 cover story that she continues to listen to The 1975, saying, “I’m still a huge fan.” Previously, Healy appeared on The Adam Friedland Show where he mentioned DMing Ice Spice without getting a response. The hosts made racially insensitive jokes, calling Ice Spice “Inuit Spice Girl” and mimicking Chinese and Hawaiian accents. Although Healy did not partake in the jokes, he was heard laughing along.

In April 2023, Healy issued an apology during a concert in New Zealand, saying his comments were “misconstrued” and that he “never meant to hurt anybody,” specifically addressing Ice Spice.

“Sorry if I’ve offended you. Ice Spice, I’m sorry. It’s not because I’m annoyed that me joking got misconstrued, it’s ’cause I don’t want Ice Spice to think that I’m a dick,” he said. “I love you Ice Spice…. It’s OK for me to be like, a trickster or whatever, but I don’t want to be perceived as mean-hearted.”

He continued, “We all get it wrong, and I just have to do it in public and then apologize to Ice Spice and my life’s just a bit weird. But I am genuinely sorry if I upset her ’cause I f—ing love her.”

Earlier, during a March interview with The New Yorker, Healy claimed he had purposely baited his fans a bit. “It doesn’t actually matter,” he said. “Nobody is sitting there at night slumped at their computer, and their boyfriend comes over and goes, ‘What’s wrong, darling?’ and they go, ‘It’s just this thing with Matty Healy.’ That doesn’t happen.”

He added, “If it does, you’re either deluded or you are, sorry, a liar. You’re either lying that you are hurt, or you’re a bit mental for being hurt. It’s just people going, ‘Oh, there’s a bad thing over there, let me get as close to it as possible so you can see how good I am.’ And I kind of want them to do that, because they’re demonstrating something so base level.”

Ice Spice previously mentioned Healy’s apologies last fall, telling Variety in September, “I saw him at the Jean Paul Gaultier party a couple of days ago, and he was like, ‘Hey, you OK?’ and I’m like, ‘Of course,'” she said. “He apologized to me a bunch of times. We’re good.”

Ice Spice, who is currently on a world tour, is preparing to release her debut album ‘Y2K’ later this week. Speaking with Rolling Stone about this milestone, the ‘Deli’ rapper said she “definitely wanted to branch out more and try different sounds” on the project, which features Travis Scott, Gunna, and Central Cee.

“I just love the ‘Y2K’ aesthetics as a whole, how people dressed,” she said. “That’s just my s—. I would just say it’s very c–ty.”

‘Y2K’ will be released 26th July.
