Jake Gyllenhaal and Denzel Washington to Star in ‘Othello’ on Broadway in 2025

Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal will star in the upcoming Broadway production of ‘Othello,’ set to hit the stage in the spring of 2025. Directed by Kenny Leon, the play will see Washington taking on the title role of Othello, with Gyllenhaal portraying the cunning and manipulative character of Iago.

Washington has also made waves on Broadway with performances in ‘Julius Caesar,’ ‘Checkmates’ and the 2018 revival of ‘Iceman Cometh.’ His upcoming projects include starring in the highly anticipated film ‘Gladiator 2.’

On the other hand, Gyllenhaal boasts three previous Broadway credits, including ‘Sunday in the Park With George’ and his most recent appearance in the 2019 production of ‘A Life.’ His next venture, the action-packed thriller ‘Road House,’ is set to premiere at South by Southwest on 8th March.

The revival of Othello is spearheaded by Brian Moreland, known for directing ‘The Piano Lesson’ and helming the current season’s production of ‘The Wiz,’ which starred Washington’s son, John David Washington. The play is slated to debut at a Shubert theatre, although the specific venue has yet to be announced.

What is ‘Othello’ About?

As for the storyline, ‘Othello’ tells the timeless Shakespearean tale of jealousy and manipulation. Iago, a subordinate officer, harbours resentment after being passed over for a promotion. In his quest for revenge against Othello, his commanding officer, Iago weaves a web of deceit and deceit, leading to tragic consequences for all involved.

The last Broadway revival of ‘Othello’ occurred in 1982, featuring James Earl Jones as Othello and Christopher Plummer as Iago. The play has also been adapted into several films, including a 1995 version starring Laurence Fishburne and Kenneth Branagh. Orson Welles’ 1951 adaptation faced initial challenges but has since been hailed as a classic interpretation of Shakespeare’s work.
