James McAvoy recently opened up about a memorable bonding moment he shared with Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen while filming 'X-Men: Days of Future Past.' Speaking at New York Comic Con, the 'California Schemin' actor explained that he was lucky enough to spend an entire afternoon with the legendary duo, even though the experience unfolded very differently from what he expected.
James McAvoy's Experience
James McAvoy explained that he had stepped into their trailer while getting hair extensions applied for the film. Stewart was cooking, McKellen was relaxing, and the atmosphere felt surprisingly casual. At the time, McAvoy had just finished his run in 'Macbeth' on London's West End, and McKellen immediately brought it up, encouraging everyone in the room—including Stewart, who had played Macbeth as well—to revisit parts of the play together.

The actor admitted that he was caught off guard by the request. Having wrapped the production only two weeks earlier, he struggled to remember any lines, while Stewart and McKellen effortlessly exchanged their favourite passages. McAvoy said the moment made him realise just how different their acting styles were, describing the two older stars as highly seasoned performers who seemed to operate on another level.
He went on to say that he felt fortunate to have been part of a unique crossover between the original 'X-Men' cast and the newer generation, alongside Michael Fassbender. According to McAvoy, only a handful of actors from both eras were able to share scenes and connect directly with their counterparts. Stewart, McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Famke Janssen, James Marsden, and Anna Paquin all returned for the film, creating a rare merging of timelines within the franchise.

James McAvoy and Patrick Stewart's Humour
Despite playing the same character, James McAvoy and Stewart have kept a playful rivalry alive for years. When discussing meaningful fan interactions at Comic Con, McAvoy joked that he especially enjoys it when fans tell him he outperformed Stewart, teasing that these comments resonate with him more than they probably should.
Stewart has also leaned into the humorous competition. During a past appearance on 'Late Night with Seth Meyers,' he joked about McAvoy claiming he would "bury" him when asked about stepping into the iconic role. Stewart responded with good-natured approval, praising McAvoy's talent and expressing genuine admiration for his younger counterpart.
The two actors continue to maintain mutual respect while keeping their friendly banter going—adding another layer of charm to their shared legacy as Professor X in the 'X-Men' universe.
