Japanese Breakfast has released a new track titled ‘My Baby (Got Nothing At All)’, featured on the soundtrack for the upcoming A24 film ‘Materialists’, directed by Celine Song. The song carries the band’s signature dreamy and whimsical style, marked by shimmering melodies and a slightly off-kilter charm.
‘Materialists’ stars Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal, and follows the story of an ambitious matchmaker in New York City who finds herself torn between the ideal partner and an imperfect ex. The film is scheduled to hit cinemas in Australia on 12th June, followed by a US release on 13th June and a UK release on 15th August. Although the full score has been composed by Daniel Pemberton, this original track comes courtesy of Japanese Breakfast.
The release follows the band’s latest album, ‘For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women)’, which arrived in March. The album has been widely praised for its lyrical depth and artistic direction. Critics highlighted how the record explored themes of decadence and modern disillusionment, using vivid imagery and a narrative approach that marked a departure from their previous work, ‘Jubilee’.

Michelle Zauner Talks Album Inspiration as Japanese Breakfast Delivers Haunting TV Performance
In an interview earlier this year, Michelle Zauner explained that the title of the album was taken from a John Cheever book. She said she liked the idea of a long, winding title and wanted it to signal that the record would be more story-driven and lyrically focused than previous releases.
In April, Japanese Breakfast performed ‘Picture Window’—a track from the new album—on Jimmy Kimmel Live, delivering a tender and haunting version that captured the song’s emotional core. The performance featured a chilling refrain: “All of my ghosts are real / All of my ghosts are my home.”
Later this month, the band is scheduled to perform at Glastonbury, although their set will clash with those of indie acts Beabadoobee and Fcukers. Zauner was previously set to perform at the festival in 2023 but had to cancel due to travel disruptions. At the time, she shared that the band had left Luxembourg at 9 p.m., dealt with customs at 3 a.m., and took a 6 a.m. ferry—only to still miss their scheduled performance despite hiring an extra driver and making every effort to arrive on time.
