Jon Bon Jovi Reveals How ‘Spirit Sister’ Shania Twain Supported Him During Vocal Surgery

During a challenging period with vocal cord issues, Jon Bon Jovi sought guidance from none other than his close friend, the renowned artist Shania Twain.

In an exclusive conversation, Bon Jovi expressed his deep gratitude for Twain, 58, referring to her as his “spirit sister” throughout the ordeal. He revealed that both he and Twain had undergone surgery with the same doctor, Robert Sataloff, albeit a few years apart, which created a unique bond of shared experience and trust between them.

The journey unfolded during the filming of Bon Jovi’s new Hulu docuseries, ‘Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story,’ where he candidly discussed the onset of his vocal cord issues dating back to 2015. However, it wasn’t until a pivotal moment on tour in 2022, that a conversation with his wife Dorothea became a turning point. Faced with the choice of seeking medical intervention or contemplating retirement due to the severity of his condition, Bon Jovi turned to Twain for counsel and support.

Twain, having undergone a vocal fold medialization procedure in 2018, became a beacon of reassurance for Bon Jovi. He recounted how Twain not only provided comfort by assuring him of the procedure’s success but also playfully nudged him forward, knowing his tendency to hesitate. Bon Jovi humorously recalled Twain’s words, “Well, I told you that because I knew that you might back out otherwise,” reflecting her understanding of his apprehensions.

Motivated by Twain’s encouragement and the prospect of reclaiming his voice, Bon Jovi underwent surgery in June 2022. The procedure successfully addressed the issues with his vocal cords, restoring his ability to sing with clarity and confidence.

Their bond and mutual support were further highlighted at the MusiCares Person of the Year Gala in February, where Bon Jovi was honoured in 2024. Twain honoured the occasion with a heartfelt rendition of Bon Jovi’s classic ‘Bed of Roses’, marking a celebration of his recovery and their enduring friendship.
