Kate Hudson had nothing but praise for director Rob Marshall as she reflected on the moment that sparked her love for movie musicals.
The 46-year-old actress was honoured with the Icon Award for her performance in 'Song Sung Blue' at the Palm Springs International Film Festival's awards gala on 3rd January. While accepting the honour onstage in Palm Springs, California, Hudson credited Marshall with inspiring her passion for musical films and encouraging her to embrace roles that showcase her singing abilities.
Kate Hudson Shares Experience Working on 'Nine'
She shared that working with Marshall on the 2009 film 'Nine' changed everything for her. The experience included weeks of intense rehearsals, dramatic wind-blown hair moments, and an unforgettable crystal costume that weighed around 15 pounds. Hudson joked that dancing in it for two days even led to noticeable weight loss. She played Vogue fashion journalist Stephanie Necrophorus in the film, which Marshall directed and loosely adapted from the stage musical of the same name.

Kate Hudson explained that 'Nine' was filled with full-performance takes and demanding musical numbers, and it made her realise how much she wanted to keep doing this kind of work. Returning to a musical role years later with 'Song Sung Blue' felt like a full-circle moment in her career. She thanked Marshall for the lasting impact he had on her journey and said working with him remains one of the greatest joys of her professional life.
In 'Song Sung Blue,' directed by Craig Brewer, Hudson stars alongside Hugh Jackman. The film is based on the real-life journey of Claire and Mike Sardina, a Milwaukee couple who rose to unexpected local fame after starting a Neil Diamond tribute band known as Lightning & Thunder.
