Kate Winslet is making her directorial debut with 'Goodbye June,' a tender holiday drama written by her son, Joe Anders. The project marks a new chapter for the acclaimed actress as she moves from centre stage to behind the camera, bringing a deeply personal family story to life. The Oscar-winning actress makes her feature-film directorial debut at the age of 49, marking a major milestone in both her career and her family’s creative journey.

The story follows four adult siblings and their father as they are forced to confront long-standing tensions when their mother's health takes an unexpected turn. Despite the looming heartbreak, their mother June—portrayed by Helen Mirren—insists on handling her decline in her own way, balancing sharp humour, blunt honesty, and unwavering love.

Kate Winslet on Directing New Film

Kate Winslet explained in an interview that directing her first film during her 50th year felt empowering, particularly as a woman who has spent decades observing and learning from filmmakers she admires. She revealed that she drew inspiration from directors like Francis Lee and Todd Haynes, as well as the wider creative community she has worked with throughout her career. Having spent so much time on film sets, she said she knew what works, what doesn't, and how to guide actors with instinct and sensitivity.

The actress admitted that at first, she and Joe considered taking the script to studios or networks. But when discussions turned to choosing another director, Kate Winslet realised she couldn't hand the project over. She told her son she wanted them both to feel ownership of the story, and that meant stepping into the director's chair herself. Once she made the decision, she approached the project with what she described as boundless energy, determined to carry the team forward.
