Kate Winslet stepped behind the camera for the first time this year with 'Goodbye June,' and her fellow cast members say the experience was unforgettable.
At a special screening of the Netflix film in New York City, Toni Collette and Timothy Spall shared what it was like working with Winslet, who not only directed the movie but also produced and starred in it. Both actors praised her leadership and natural ability as a first-time director.
'Goodbye June' Cast Shares Experience Working With Kate Winslet
Toni Collette, who has long hoped to work with Winslet, described the collaboration as a dream come true. She said the project felt especially meaningful because it marked Winslet's directing debut and was a family effort, based on a script written by Winslet's son, Joe Anders. Being chosen to take part in such a personal milestone, she explained, felt like a real honour.

According to Collette, Winslet's talent behind the camera came as no surprise. She said the set was warm, supportive, and filled with trust, giving the actors freedom to do their best work. She also described Kate Winslet as generous, kind, grounded, and funny, adding that no one wanted the experience to end.
Timothy Spall shared similar feelings and noted that working with Winslet as a director felt completely natural. The two have known each other for years, having first worked together when Kate Winslet was just 19 during a production of 'Hamlet.' He said the qualities that stood out to him back then—her openness, humour, honesty, and intelligence—have only deepened over time.

Timothy Spall on Kate Winslet's Directorial Debut
He also pointed out that Winslet's years of experience working with some of the world’s most respected directors clearly shaped her approach. In his view, her skill as an actor and everything she has learned throughout her career came together perfectly in her directing debut, making it feel like a role she was always meant to take on.
'Goodbye June' features an ensemble cast that includes Helen Mirren, Andrea Riseborough, Johnny Flynn, and Fisayo Akinade. The film centres on a family thrown into emotional turmoil during the Christmas season after an unexpected change in their mother's health. As tensions rise, their sharp-witted mother, played by Mirren, faces her situation with humour, honesty, and love, guiding her family through the chaos in her own way.
'Goodbye June' is now streaming on Netflix.
