Katy Perry Gets Emotional During Final ‘American Idol’ Season Finale

Katy Perry, the renowned singer, and judge on ‘American Idol,’ experienced an emotional moment during the season finale. Perry, 39, joined the show as a judge in 2018, alongside Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. The trio has been a staple of the show since its revival on ABC after the original 15-season run on Fox.

During the finale, Perry became visibly upset and cried after contestant Abi Carter secured her victory. As Carter performed a poignant rendition of Billie Eilish’s ‘What Was I Made For?’ Perry embraced her fellow judges, Bryan and Richie, overwhelmed by the moment. Carter triumphed over finalists Will Moseley and Jack Blocker, who placed second and third, respectively.

This emotional finale marked the end of Perry’s tenure on ‘American Idol.’ Earlier this year, she announced her departure from the show during an appearance on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ She reflected on her journey with the show and hinted at future projects, including new music, slated for release later in 2024.

“I think this probably will be my last show, my last season for ‘Idol,’” Perry said. “I love ‘Idol’ so much. It’s connected me with the heart of America, but I feel like I need to go out and feel that pulse to my own beat,” she added, winking at host Jimmy Kimmel.

Luke Bryan, 47, commented on Perry’s departure in an interview with Taste of Country Nights, saying, “I had heard whispers that she was thinking about it — it wasn’t a huge shock.” He reminisced about their time together, noting, “It’s been a good run with Katy, and she and I have developed a great friendship. I mean, heck, I was there before her daughter was born, and now her daughter is three years old.”

Perry and her fiancé, Orlando Bloom, welcomed their daughter Daisy Dove in August 2020. Bryan’s remarks highlight the close bond formed between the judges over the years, both professionally and personally.

Lionel Richie, 74, also shared his thoughts with PEOPLE, expressing the deep connection he, Perry, and Bryan have developed. “We’ve kind of developed a little family,” he said. “What’s happening now is that we keep talking about her leaving, but it hasn’t registered yet. So I think as it goes on, Luke and I will probably get together and realize that we’re going to kidnap her,” he added humorously.

Perry’s departure signifies the end of an era for ‘American Idol’. Her presence on the show has been influential, bringing her unique perspective and vibrant personality to the judging panel.
