Keira Knightley Reveals Seasickness on 'The Woman in Cabin 10' Set

Filming a movie on a luxury yacht presented unique challenges for Keira Knightley and the cast of 'The Woman in Cabin 10.' Knightley stars as Lo Blacklock, an investigative journalist who, while on a travel assignment aboard a luxury yacht, finds herself in a terrifying situation after witnessing a woman thrown overboard—an event no one believes happened.

'The Woman in Cabin 10,' the Netflix adaptation of Ruth Ware's 2016 thriller, also stars Guy Pearce as billionaire Richard Bullmer and David Ajala as Lo's ex and photographer, Ben. Much of the filming took place on the yacht, and the cast struggled with seasickness, particularly in a room with a glass wall overlooking a swimming pool, which constantly displayed moving water. The actors spent several days in this "room of doom" before adjustments were made to reduce nausea.

Filming Restrictions on 'The Woman in Cabin 10' Set

The yacht's luxurious amenities offered a picturesque backdrop, but strict filming restrictions limited the cast's ability to enjoy them. Actors were not allowed to touch walls, walk on carpets, or sit on furnishings due to the yacht's design and the presence of both film and yacht crews. With 25 crew members operating the yacht, 70 filming crew members, and 20 actors on set, space was tight, and the environment required careful coordination.

Despite the challenges, including the close quarters and seasickness, the cast and crew of 'The Woman in Cabin 10' adapted quickly and maintained their professionalism.

Pearce noted that the yacht's movement was kept as gentle as possible for those prone to seasickness, while Knightley emphasised how filming required everyone to remain mindful of the yacht’s limitations. Ajala added that, even under restrictive conditions, the team managed to convey the illusion of enjoying the luxurious setting.

'The Woman in Cabin 10' is now streaming on Netflix, offering viewers a suspenseful thriller set against the striking, if challenging, backdrop of life at sea.
