During an 'Ask Kelly Anything' segment on 'The Kelly Clarkson Show' YouTube channel, the Grammy-winning artist was asked which track took her the least amount of time to complete.

Kelly Clarkson explained that the honour goes to her festive hit 'Underneath the Tree,' written during a studio session with renowned producer Greg Kurstin. She recounted that she had ordered sushi at the start of the session and managed to finish writing the song before the food even arrived. The process flowed effortlessly for her, something she credits to her genuine love of Christmas music. According to Kelly Clarkson, holiday songs allow for a bit more fun and sentimentality, giving her the freedom to embrace feel-good, even cheesy, lyrics without worrying about being cool, something she says has never been a priority for her.

'Underneath the Tree' went on to become a modern Christmas classic. The song climbed to No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and held the top spot on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart for four weeks. Its success didn’t stop there — the track was also featured on Clarkson’s holiday album Wrapped in Red and has earned a place on ASCAP’s Top 10 New Classic Holiday Songs list. It even made it to No. 24 on ASCAP’s prestigious list of the Top 25 Holiday Songs of all time.

Kelly Clarkson reflected on the song’s creation, noting that Kurstin had sent her home with a basic piano arrangement that captured the essence of a nostalgic Christmas vibe. This sonic foundation inspired her to finish the song in record time. While most of her songwriting sessions can be lengthy, this one stood out for its speed and ease.
