Kristen Stewart Calls Out Hollywood’s ‘Phony’ Efforts to Combat Patriarchy

Kristen Stewart recently appeared on the cover of Porter Magazine, where she offered a critical perspective on Hollywood’s purported strides in overcoming patriarchy. While acknowledging some progress, Stewart highlighted the industry’s tendency to showcase selected women in positions of power, rather than effecting widespread change.

In discussing patriarchy, Stewart echoed a common frustration within the film industry, where diversity and inclusion efforts can often seem superficial.

She remarked, “It’s easy for them to be like, ‘Look what we’re doing. We’re making Maggie Gyllenhaal’s movie! We’re making Margot Robbie’s movie!’ And you’re like, ‘We’re making Maggie Gyllenhaal’s movie! We’re making Margot Robbie’s movie!’ OK, cool. You’ve chosen four.”

Expressing admiration for these women, Stewart cautioned against self-congratulation without substantive progress, stating, “If we’re congratulating each other for broadening perspective when we haven’t really done enough, then we stop broadening.”

Stewart also shared her personal struggles in securing financing for her feature directorial debut, ‘The Chronology of Water,’ based on Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir. She revealed her decision to pause acting projects until the directorial endeavour moves forward, with Imogen Poots attached to star in the lead role. However, no official start date for the project has been confirmed yet.
