Kristen Stewart is looking back on the moment she publicly came out while hosting Saturday Night Live in 2017 and sharing why that decision mattered so much to her.
In a new interview airing on ABC News Live Prime with Linsey Davis, the 35-year-old actress and director reflects on the now-iconic SNL monologue that took place nearly nine years ago. At the time, she openly acknowledged her sexuality while responding to then-President Donald Trump, a moment that quickly became cultural headline news.
Kristen Stewart Explains Her Opinion
Kristen Stewart explains that the decision was never about revealing details of her romantic life. Instead, it was about recognising how many people feel forced to hide parts of themselves just to get by. She says she had seen and experienced conversations with people she cared about who believed her career would be easier if she kept her relationship private. To her, that felt like being asked to live only part of a life and to support a system that shuts others out, something she was not willing to do.

Her personal life had already been under intense public scrutiny for years, dating back to her high-profile relationship with her 'Twilight' co-star Robert Pattinson in the early 2010s. During her SNL appearance, she addressed several old social media posts made by Trump about that relationship, using the moment to speak openly about who she is.
In the interview, Kristen Stewart says it was clear that her life was already being discussed long before she officially came out. While she did not want her relationships to become a product for public consumption, she also did not want to hide from the world. She wanted to help shape it into a more open and accepting place, especially since she was already living openly in her daily life.
She adds that she has never wanted to hide herself from others. Letting people know who she is felt natural, and at that point, speaking out felt like it could help open doors for others who might be struggling to do the same.

Stewart began dating screenwriter Dylan Meyer in 2019, and the two married in April 2025. Speaking recently at the Variety Creative Impact Awards, Kristen Stewart described the past year as the most intense of her life, balancing marriage with both her and Meyer stepping into directing roles.
