Machine Gun Kelly Talks About Late Father in New Interview: “I am Very Emotional”
Machine Gun Kelly, also known as MGK, has candidly discussed his relationship with his father and its profound impact on his life. Speaking on the ‘Dumb Blonde’ podcast with Bunnie XO, the rapper-turned-pop-punk-turned-country star, whose real name is Colson Baker, revealed details about his father’s troubled past and their complicated bond.
MGK was born in Houston, Texas, but his childhood was far from typical. His parents were Christian missionaries, leading the family to move around the world. He learned Arabic before English due to living in Egypt as a toddler and also spent time in Kenya and Germany.

During the podcast, Kelly described his father as a deeply emotional person who had experienced severe trauma. “In my situation with my father, he was so tormented from some of the most insane things that I can imagine a kid can go through,” he told Bunnie XO.
His father’s emotional transparency left a lasting impression on Kelly. “The emotional side of things I get from my father, who was very, you know, he wore everything on his sleeve. His depression was very obvious; his need for love was very [obvious]. I wish I could’ve told him before he died that I was really inspired by how emotional he was. I thought that was very cool in hindsight because I am very emotional, too,” Kelly shared.
MGK recounted how he used to get frustrated with his father, especially when he would react fearfully to loud noises or sudden scares. “I would be like, ‘You’re supposed to be a man, dude. Why are you acting like this?’ and it made me hate him.”
Kelly revealed a harrowing story from his father’s childhood that shed light on his father’s behaviour. “And then you sit there and you think about a kid who was on trial at nine years old for the murder of his father, and knowing that the police found the shotgun underneath the bed. The story that was always told to me was that their dad dropped the gun and his head essentially blew off. It all happened in the room with my dad at nine years old. So he and my grandmother were tried for the murder. They were both acquitted.”
In addition to discussing his father, MGK spoke about his relationship with his mother, who left the family when he was nine. After she left, he and his father moved to Denver, Colorado, to live with his aunt. Reflecting on his mother, Kelly said, “I would like to say for the record, I love my mom dearly and I misrepresented her a lot early in my career. And not misrepresented in the sense of not speaking the truth. I was speaking my truth, but I didn’t give the masses the chance to understand her truth.”
Despite the pain caused by her departure, MGK and his mother have since reconciled, mending their relationship over time.
