Martin Scorsese Becomes The Most Oscar-Nominated Director
Martin Scorsese clinched another feather for his cap as his nod for ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ was confirmed. This marks Scorsese as the living director with the most Oscar nominations, a substantial feat at the age of 81. The Academy included the veteran director in their ‘Best Director’ shortlist, securing his tenth nomination overall and surpassing Steven Spielberg’s previous record of nine.
Scorsese’s journey with Oscar nominations dates back to 1980’s ‘Raging Bull,’ yet it’s worth noting that he has only claimed the coveted prize once, for his work on 2006’s ‘The Departed.’ Recent nominations include acclaimed films like ‘The Irishman,’ ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ and ‘Hugo.’
In this latest Oscar race, Scorsese finds himself in esteemed company alongside directors such as Christopher Nolan for ‘Oppenheimer,’ Justine Triet for ‘Anatomy of a Fall,’ Yorgos Lanthimos for ‘Poor Things’ and Jonathan Glazer for ‘The Zone of Interest.’ Unfortunately, Greta Gerwig, the creative force behind Barbie, missed the Academy’s nod, leaving fans of the film in a state of discontent.

This Oscar nomination not only cements Scorsese as the most nominated living director but also places him second on the all-time list, trailing behind William Wyler, who achieved a remarkable 12 nominations during his lifetime. Wyler, a three-time Oscar winner, secured accolades for ‘Mrs. Miniver,’ ‘The Best Years of Our Lives’ and ‘Ben Hur.’
Other living directors making waves in the all-time list include Woody Allen with seven nominations and Francis Ford Coppola, Clint Eastwood and Peter Weir, each boasting four nominations.
As for the overall Oscar race this year, ‘Oppenheimer’ leads the pack with an impressive 13 nominations, covering categories such as ‘Best Picture,’ ‘Best Director’ and ‘Best Actor’ for the talented Cillian Murphy. ‘Poor Things’ secures the second spot with 11 nods, closely followed by ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ with a commendable 10 nominations.
