Melissa Barrera is currently at the epicentre of a rumour whirlwind.

As James Gunn and Peter Safran continue reshaping the DC Universe, speculation around the future of key characters is reaching a fever pitch, especially when it comes to Wonder Woman. With a rebooted version of the Amazonian warrior officially in development, fans are passionately debating who should take up the mantle of Diana Prince. One name that keeps rising to the top: 'Scream' and 'Abigail' star Melissa Barrera.

She expressed that being connected to Wonder Woman is meaningful because of what the character stands for — strength, compassion, and integrity. Barrera noted that whoever ends up portraying Diana will carry a great responsibility, not just on-screen, but off it as well. Melissa Barrera highlighted how superhero roles come with an immense platform, and that actors who take them on should strive to be positive examples in the real world, rather than using their influence for personal gain.

Is Wonder Woman Still Happening in the DCU?

In a recent update, James Gunn confirmed that Wonder Woman remains in active development, although the project is moving at a slower pace than others in the DCU slate. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Gunn stated that the movie is still in the writing phase, indicating that while the process is gradual, it’s very much alive.

Details about who’s penning the script remain under wraps, though some industry insiders speculate that Gunn may be involved creatively. What’s also clear is that Gal Gadot, who famously portrayed Wonder Woman in the DCEU, will not be reprising the role. Despite early comments from Gadot hinting at a potential return, subsequent reports confirmed that a third film under director Patty Jenkins was cancelled following creative disagreements.

As Gunn and Safran work to launch their unified DC Universe with new actors and fresh storylines, the casting of Wonder Woman is shaping up to be one of the most high-profile decisions yet. Whether Melissa Barrera ultimately dons the armour or not, her name being in the mix speaks to the fanbase’s desire for a modern, grounded take on the legendary Amazon.
