Meryl Streep Makes Golden Globes History: Breaks Own Record as Most-Nominated Actor

Meryl Streep is making history at the Golden Globe Awards. The 74-year-old actress has secured her 33rd career nomination, breaking her own record as the most-nominated actor in Golden Globes history. The nomination is for ‘Best Supporting Actress’ (Musical, Comedy, or Drama) for her role in Hulu’s ‘Only Murders in the Building’ at the upcoming 81st ceremony.
The Golden Globes’ official website notes that Streep initially set the record as the most-nominated actor when she received her 30th nomination. She also holds the record for the most wins at the Globes, having secured nine wins.

Competing in the same category at the 2024 Golden Globes are Elizabeth Debicki (‘The Crown’), Abby Elliott (‘The Bear’), Christina Ricci (‘Yellowjackets’), J. Smith-Cameron (‘Succession’) and Hannah Waddingham (‘Ted Lasso’).

Streep, who received the Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2017, where she made headlines for her commentary on then-President-elect Donald Trump, is recognized alongside Jodie Foster for having been a nominee or winner at the awards in every decade since the 1970s. Foster, 61, is nominated for ‘Best Supporting Actress in a Movie’ for her role in Netflix’s ‘Nyad,’ co-starring with ‘Best Actress’ (Drama) nominee Annette Bening.
Other nominees in the category include Emily Blunt (‘Oppenheimer’), Danielle Brooks (‘The Color Purple’), Julianne Moore (‘May December’), Rosamund Pike (‘Saltburn’) and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (‘The Holdovers’).

‘Barbie’ secured a total of nine nominations, leading the pack in total nominations among films. Following closely, ‘Oppenheimer’ received eight nods, while ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ and ‘Poor Things’ both garnered seven nominations.
On the television front, ‘Only Murders in the Building’, featuring Meryl Streep, received five nominations, tying with ‘The Bear’, while the final season of ‘Succession’ earned a substantial nine nominations. This year, the awards show introduced two new categories: cinematic and box office achievement in motion pictures and best stand-up comedian on television.

The January awards ceremony will mark the Golden Globes’ first broadcast under Dick Clark Productions and holding company Eldridge, which acquired the rights and assets to the long-standing awards show in June. Previously overseen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association since its founding in 1943, the Golden Globes faced notable controversies in recent years related to its management of the event.
The 2024 Golden Globe Awards are scheduled to be broadcast live on CBS on Sunday, 7th January, from 8 to 11 p.m. ET. Additionally, the ceremony will be available for streaming on Paramount+ and the CBS app.
