Casting remains secret, but rumours are gaining momentum. Dermot Mulroney, who played Michael in the original, recently hinted that discussions about a sequel are taking place. Reflecting on the film in a recent interview, he recalled the excitement of being cast opposite Julia Roberts and recognised even then that the project had the potential to become a classic.

What is 'My Best Friend’s Wedding' About?

'My Best Friend’s Wedding' followed the story of Julianne, played by Roberts, who realises she's in love with her best friend Michael just days before his wedding. Julianne sets out to stop the wedding and win him back, but ends up facing the reality of love and timing. The film also starred Cameron Diaz as Michael’s upbeat and unsuspecting fiancée Kimmy, along with Rupert Everett, Carrie Preston, and Philip Bosco in memorable supporting roles.

The sequel’s development comes at a time when nostalgic romantic comedies are finding new life, and Song is seen as the ideal creative mind to revisit this story. Known for capturing emotional nuance and romantic tension, she has cited Nora Ephron as a major influence, calling the late filmmaker the queen of the genre. Song's talent for blending heart and humour is evident in both 'Past Lives' and 'Materialists'.

While plot details for the sequel remain unknown, the return of 'My Best Friend’s Wedding' is already stirring excitement among fans eager to see where these characters might be nearly three decades later.
