From Plumbers to Power Stars: What the Trailer Reveals
In the newly released trailer, Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) are seen taunting a pint-sized Bowser (Jack Black), who, after devouring a Mini Mushroom at the end of the first movie, has shrunk and become their reluctant prisoner. But, the peace is temporary as Bowser Jr. (voiced by Benny Safdie) makes a dramatic entrance, launching a daring plan to break his father out.
In the meantime, Princess Rosalina (voiced by Brie Larson) makes her appearance as a strong cosmic figure, transforming into a spider-like robot in an exciting action scene with her magical wand. A voyage across worlds, including a water world and a desert world with upside-down pyramids, and soaring star fields are also teased in the released trailer, suggesting that the movie is both an inspiration from both Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Odyssey.

The film is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, who have also led the first animated Mario movie, with Matthew Fogel returning as the screenwriter. The 2007 Wii game 'Super Mario Galaxy,' in which Mario has traveled galaxies in search of Power Stars, has served as the direct inspiration for the plot. Additionally, in a clever nod to 'Super Mario Sunshine' (2002), Bowser Jr. wields a magical paintbrush, and Rosalina's powers feel deeply rooted in her video-game origin.
Legacy, Expectations, and the Road Ahead
The first 'Super Mario Bros. Movie' was a huge success, making over $1.3 billion worldwide and ranking among the highest-grossing animated movies ever. That success clearly paved the way for this sequel. Fans can anticipate a visually spectacular show, more daring set pieces, and more in-depth history taken directly from vintage video games in upcoming 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.'
The trailer clearly gives us the hint that the movie will boldly expand the Mario cinematic universe by promising intergalactic travel, new antagonists, and magical abilities. Given the legacy of its video-game inspirations and the powerhouse cast behind it, the movie seems poised not just to match—but perhaps even surpass—its predecessor in scale and imagination.
